Braddom’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 5th Edition PREFACE

Braddom’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation represents the amalgamation of more than 75 years of formal physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) research and practice in the United States, with additional decades of contributions from around the globe. It took the dedicated team of authors, editors, and support staff nearly 2 years to bring this completely updated fifth edition to you, with state of the art technologic links; easy to use tables and videos; practical, evidence-influenced approaches to diagnosis and management; and a strong focus on the application of the core principles of PM&R.

The field of PM&R has come a long, long way from its nineteenth century informal roots in the U.S. Civil War and the postbellum modalities craze, as well as from its more formal origins in the world wars of the early twentieth century. Although an interdisciplinary team focus on the needs of individuals with acute and chronic disability has remained at the heart of the field, increasingly, the role of technology and interventional procedures to diagnose, monitor, manage, and deliver virtual care for neurologic, musculoskeletal, and connective tissue disorders and disability has helped to move the field into the twenty-first century. As with the impact of warfare on the informal and formal origins of PM&R, the Persian Gulf wars of the twenty-first century have played a significant influence on the recent advances in the field of PM&R.

This textbook helps to serve as a vital bridge between the essential core principles and approaches of PM&R that have allowed the field to become the mainstay of care for individuals with illnesses and injuries that result in neurologic and orthopedic dysfunction, and the cutting edge research and innovative technologies that are expanding the scope of conditions that can be assessed and managed by PM&R professionals and are offering effective new tools for the core conditions that PM&R clinicians see.

It also serves as a connection between the long-standing, consensus-based PM&R models of care that have enhanced the lives of millions of individuals living with disabling conditions and the evidence-based research findings that are being disseminated in the scientific literature, introducing new and modified approaches to care that bring together
decades of clinical experience and excellence with emerging translational findings.

Given the veritable explosion of knowledge translation and dissemination in the field of PM&R, this fifth edition features an easy to access electronic version with additional information, self-assessment questions and videos, as well as Internet linkage to additional resources. Just as the field of PM&R has progressed and expanded exponentially, so too has Braddom’s Textbook of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation kept pace with the information explosion. This textbook represents the key, overarching resource for practitioners in the field of PM&R,
and its users are fortunate to have the nation’s long-time, established academic leaders and its up and coming new
generation of educators as its authors.

The topical areas have been organized to reflect both the essentials of the field and its emerging trends. Take full advantage of all the textbook has to offer and use it to continue on the traditions of excellence that have made PM&R perhaps the most relevant fields of health care in the twenty-first century.

This textbook would not have been possible without the tireless effort of so many individuals, all dedicated to producing the highest quality textbook possible. As with all good things in physical medicine and rehabilitation, it
took a highly skilled and interdisciplinary team to get the optimal outcome demonstrated in this textbook; the contributions of all members of the team are eagerly acknowledged. Specifically, let me acknowledge the outstanding
work of my Associate Editors who cracked the whips and used their laptops into the long hours of the night; thank
you Karen, Michelle, Kris, Henry, Greg, and Darryl.

All the authors who contributed to this process for little more than a copy of the textbook are to be acknowledged and celebrated. The team at Elsevier, led by Ann Anderson, have been fantastic collaborators who have always been highly flexible and professional throughout. On a more local level, let me acknowledge the patience and organization of my Department office staff, led by my personal assistant, Connie Hawkes, who keeps me on task and track as much as is possible….
